Oklahoma City Thunder Launch Title Defense with Thrilling Double Overtime Victory
The Thunder star joined the Thunder back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the game-winning baskets deep into a second overtime period as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a narrow win over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds remaining in double OT, securing the champions a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with a game-high 39 and also connected on a career-high five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points of his own, played a major role alongside match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Grit and defense," SGA commented of their showing. "We know that when we execute on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, good luck or bad luck. We did enough defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a positive beginning."
Prior to the game, the team's championship banner was raised at their arena, while the squad were presented with their title rings.
Oklahoma City beat the Indiana Pacers in last season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had claimed the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the opportunity to secure some payback on Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston return to action on the same day at the Detroit Pistons.
Elsewhere, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Luka Doncic was insufficient to prevent his current team the Los Angeles Lakers from suffering a 119-109 loss against the Golden State Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 points for the visiting Warriors.
Los Angeles were without the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he is recovering from sciatica.
