Sonic Racing Takes Aim at Mario Kart World in Latest Promotional Push

It's 2025, and the marketing drive for Sega's CrossWorlds Racer aim to recall the classic Sega vs. Nintendo spirit. A new commercial for the Sega's racing game apparently displays pixelated video of the competing franchise, using it to suggest that the opposition's game underuses its expansive design.

Questioning the Competition

"We all know that popular racer, it's enjoyable, we don't need to feature it," the promo begins. "But what if you could race aggressively and compete on a different plane?" The spot then goes on to emphasize many of Sonic Racing's key aspects, including extensive vehicle customization and multi-system play.

"Alternatively, perhaps you prefer to drive around on the free map?" the voiceover asks, filled with doubt.

Past Instances of Rivalry

While this is not the initial instance that the team behind the Sonic racing game have called out Nintendo's game, it is certainly the clearest they have acted regarding the competition between titles. The commercial also echoes a retro promo for the Sega Genesis that told audiences about the console's "blast processing" power. Back then, Sega emphasized its hardware advantage by featuring a race car dominating a course. Toward the end, it contrasted the Nintendo's console to an aging Winnebago that had Nintendo's classic playing on a tube screen strapped to the rear of the RV using a cord.

Availability

CrossWorlds is set to release next week on the 25th of September for Nintendo's hybrid console, Sony's previous-gen system, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Series X. However, players who pre-order can access it sooner... but not if they're on Switch. Welp.
