This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like typical body horror, but within Together lies a deep examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Debut Feature Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a particular energy to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the symbolism never feels clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a strong argument for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
