UN Ends Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members voted in favour to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of his Washington trip the coming week.

He was appointed interim leader following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that removed the former president in December 2024, ending 13 years of civil war.

The US representative Mike Waltz at the United Nations declared the global body transmitted "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions in his role as head of the religious organization the HTS movement, once connected to the terrorist network. The US removed the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups this past July.

Additional Sanctions Relief

The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official Anas Khattab.

The Syrian diplomatic chief welcomed the removal of the sanctions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and supportive states for backing the country and its population."

Imminent Washington Talks

The Syrian leader's Washington trip this coming Monday follows President Trump remarked that Sharaa achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump said Sharaa possessed "a genuine opportunity to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions initially during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip while traveling through the Middle East.

Following that encounter, America's leader characterized the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

The HTS organization he led was al-Qaeda's affiliate inside the country until he severed ties during 2016.

Previous US Visit

Monday's visit will not be his initial visit to America this year. During September, he emerged as the initial Syrian president to address the United Nations gathering in New York for nearly six decades.

In his speech, he stated the country had been "reclaiming its rightful place across international circles" and expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza.
